- "The approach will not be easy. You are required to maneuver straight down this trench and skim the surface to this point. The target area is only two meters wide. It's a small thermal exhaust port, right below the main port. The shaft leads directly to the reactor system. A precise hit will start a chain reaction which should destroy the station."
- ―General Jan Dodonna
The Imperial standard meter, often shortened to meter, was an established unit of measurement for length used by the Galactic Empire.[2] One meter equaled 100 centimeters,[3] or 1000 millimeters, and was roughly equivalent to three feet.[4] Despite being named after the Galactic Empire, the meter was also used during the Galactic Republic's reign as well.[5]
After scouring the plans for the Death Star, General Jan Dodonna discovered that a small, exposed, thermal exhaust port led directly to the massive battle station's reactor core. The small exhaust port was only two meters wide, meaning a small starfighter would be able to attack the vulnerable exhaust port. Luke Skywalker expressed that this mission was not impossible, explaining the he used to bulls-eye womp rats in his T-16 back home, which were not much bigger than two meters. Skywalker eventually succeeded in firing a proton torpedo into the exhaust port and destroying the battle station during the Battle of Yavin.[1]

If you impact at a hundred times the velocity you're supposed to, it makes something of a difference."
