Zebitrope IV was a terrestrial planet[4] located in the Zebitrope system,[2] a part of the Centrality sector in the Slice portion of the Outer Rim Territories.[1] It occupied the fourth orbital position in its star system,[3] which was connected to the Cadma system via the Cadma Conduit hyperlane.[1]

A world of rolling savannas and oceans,[4] Zebitrope IV was the homeworld of a[2] rare[6] species of lizard[2] that could also be found on the planet Zebitrope VIII.[3] The lizards had a symbiotic relationship with a type of mold[2] that only grew on the reptiles' backs. The Zebitrope IV lizard species also had a mutually beneficial relationship with an unusual type of spongy growth that nurtured the reptiles and offered them concealment.[5] The mold growing on the lizards was the only source of[2] the valuable and illegal drug lesai, which was exported to the wider galaxy by smugglers.[6]

Behind the scenes

Zebitrope IV was first mentioned in Lando Calrissian and the Flamewind of Oseon, the 1983 second entry in The Lando Calrissian Adventures trilogy of novels by L. Neil Smith.[5] The planet's first full appearance came in the 1998 video game Star Wars: Rebellion, which also provided Zebitrope IV's only visual depiction—an image also used to illustrate eighteen other worlds in the game.[4]

"Twinkle, Twinkle Little Star, How I Wonder Where We Are," a 1990 roleplaying game source article published in the thirteenth issue of the Voyages SF magazine, placed the Zebitrope system, and therefore Zebitrope IV, in the Zebitrope sector. Since that article was released outside of the Lucas Licensing process, its canonicity within the Star Wars Legends continuity was never confirmed.[7] Star Wars: Rebellion later placed Zebitrope IV in the "Dufilvan sector,"[4] a misspelling of the Dufilvian sector.[8] The 2009 reference book The Essential Atlas subsequently overrode both the Voyages SF 13 and Star Wars: Rebellion placements by establishing that the Zebitrope system was situated in grid square T-8 as part of the Centrality.[1]

Information from The Essential Atlas created an apparent contradiction[1] with the mention of Zebitrope IV in Lando Calrissian and the Flamewind of Oseon. The latter work describes a collection of spongy growths that could be found on Zebitrope IV as having originated on a planet "a quarter of a galaxy away" from the asteroid Oseon 6845 of the Oseon system,[5] which The Essential Atlas places in the same sector as the Zebitrope system.[9]
