- "And if that were not enough to deter the bold, there are the legends of Grendel, a monstrous worm of uncanny cunning, a hater of men and eater of ships."
- ―The Slug Named Grendel by Rogar Farnoster
Grendel, the great space slug, was the antagonist of Rogar Farnoster's seminal work The Slug Named Grendel. He was the target of Flandon Sweeg, a spacer who sought the great slug in its home in the Borkeen Belt. He was regarded by many as a legend only, monstrous in size, remarkably cunning, and known to hate men and starships alike.
Behind the scenes
Grendel is similar to that of Moby Dick, the great white whale of Herman Melville's novel of the same name. Grendel's name, however, comes from the monster antagonist of the epic poem Beowulf.
