Deserts were regions on planets with very low amounts of precipitation. Deserts were classified by lack of precipitation, not specifically heat as desert landscapes were hot due to proximity of nearby stars or simply arid because it was too cold to precipitate.
Deserts were large expanses of bare ground with little vegetation or plant cover. Harsh and dry, deserts were ecosystems in which both plant and animals were capable of surviving for long periods without food and water. Deserts could be of varied terrain but were mainly rocky or sandy and characterized by infertile land and a lack of rain. Temperatures in desert areas were typically hot during the day and cold at night since they were not affected by humidity. Truly cold deserts were known as tundras.[2]
