Gold Leader/Legends
- "Red Leader, this is Gold Leader."
"I copy, Gold Leader."
"We're starting for the target shaft now." - ―Jon "Dutch" Vander to Garven Dreis
Gold Leader or Gold One was the call sign of the Commander of Gold Squadron. There were a number of starfighter squadrons with this name, and several pilots went by the call sign Gold Leader.
History
Galactic Republic
During the Battle of Muunilinst, a clone trooper pilot was the Gold Leader of a Republic V-19 Torrent starfighter unit. He was killed by incoming Geonosian starfighters.[5]
Anakin Skywalker had the call sign Gold Leader during the Battle of Bothawui.[1]
A Delta-7 Aethersprite-class light interceptor pilot led the Republic's Gold Group as Gold Leader in defense of the Galactic Senate over Coruscant.[6]
Rebel Alliance
The call sign was used by Jon "Dutch" Vander when he flew with the Rebel Alliance's Gold Squadron during the Battle of Yavin. Vander was killed in the assault against the Death Star.[2][7]
During an attempted ambush of Darth Vader in the Sixela system, a Rebel using the call sign Gold Leader ordered Alliance forces to follow their Imperial adversaries in retreating, escaping the system as it was destroyed by a supernova triggered by renegade Imperial Commander Rezi Soresh.[8]
Lando Calrissian was Gold Leader during the Battle of Endor while commanding Gold Group, the force that assaulted and destroyed the second Death Star.[9]
When Gold Squadron—without Calrissian—joined the Rebel Bakura task force during the planet's invasion by the Ssi-ruuvi Imperium shortly after the Alliance's victory at Endor, another Gold Leader led the squadron against a Ssi-ruuvi Wurrif-class light cruiser, destroying several of the Imperium's Swarm-class battle droids in the process.[10]
Alliance of Free Planets
Calrissian also served as Gold Leader during the Second Battle of Endor, where the Alliance of Free Planets repelled the Nagai fighter squadrons led by Lumiya.[3]
New Republic
During a simulation exercise to qualify for Wedge Antilles's new squadron, Kell Tainer used the call sign of Gold One.[4]
Behind the scenes
In the Rogue Squadron series of games, Gold Leader was the name of an unlockable field rank, accessed when gaining 61-70 points.
