A firing cell was a component of the Hoersch-Kessel ion drive. For optimum performance, the firing cells had to be precisely aligned with the engine intake. Regular maintenance to ensure that the firing cells stayed in alignment was advised, as improperly adjusted firing cells could lead to damaging or destruction of the drive.[1]
