The SM-series scavenger droid was a droid used by the New Republic to examine starship wrecks and scavenge what it could. They would also make sure it was safe for organics to explore. It operated best in zero-gravity conditions, and would always work with a partner, so if one was destroyed, the other could film its demise.[2] While these droids would perform the majority of the physical retrieval, the examination of recovered artifacts would be performed by remote operators assisted by DA model data analysis droids.[3]

The fleet hauler Steadfast deployed SM scavenger droids at the derelict Imperial I-class Star Destroyer Gnisnal in 16 ABY, where they found a memory core containing an Imperial Order of Battle that was instrumental in resolving the Black Fleet Crisis.[2]
