VGK-3 Shooting Star class starfighter
The VGK-3 Shooting Star class starfighter was a high performance prototype starfighter designed by Koensayr Manufacturing.
Characteristics
This craft derived its name from the star-like image its five wings suggested when viewed from the forward quarter. Although the starfighter was considered slow, it was also sturdy and well-armed: its proton torpedo launchers made it a threat to capital ships, while its aft ion cannons could ward off attacks from the rear quarter.
History
The VGK-3 was initially under development by Koensayr Manufacturing on behalf of the Galactic Empire, but a prototype was stolen by Rebel agents during the Galactic Civil War. Koensayr evidently continued work on the design for the Rebellion. Shortly before the Battle of Endor, this Alliance prototype was itself stolen—and christened the Warhog—by Rebel defector Bryce Agoris, a former Infiltrator, and freelance operative Myrgaanti Shi-Iki.
As a result, the VGK-3 project fell behind schedule and most hope for the nascent New Republic to obtain these fighters had been dashed. It was suspected that the surviving VGK-3 was in poor condition, as the two thieves had extensively employed the fighter but did not have the credits to properly maintain it.
