The History and Development of the Human Languages, Volume I was a document written by Dr. Arner Figgis. The article was about the history of Galactic Basic Standard, focusing particularly on its roots in Old Coruscanti. It was referenced as being "amazing" and an "invaluable resource" in the Further readings section of The Written Word: A Brief Introduction to the Writing Systems of Galactic Basic, written by Dr. Milanda Vorgan.[1]

Behind the scenes

The History and Development of the Human Languages, Volume I was first referenced in the StarWars.com Hyperspace article, The Written Word in 2010, under the "Further readings" section.[1] Author John Hazlett wrote in his blog that the section was to give his article some in-universe context.[2]

Hazlett attributed the fictional work to the character of Arner Figgis, who originated from the August 1995 Star Wars Adventure Journal 7. According to Hazlett, the character's personality in another in-universe work, Old Corellian: A Guide for the Curious Scholar, leant itself to the verbose titles of older "British magna opera," such as Edward Gibbon's The History of the Decline and Fall of the Roman Empire and Winston Churchill's A History of the English-Speaking Peoples.[2]
