Targeting computer linkup helmet
A targeting computer linkup helmet,[3] also known as a targeting and tracking computer linkup helmet[4] and a computerized gunnery helmet[5] was a combat helmet used by Imperial gunners.[4] The helmets assigned in weapons targeting,[3] and were worn by gunners assigned to the first Death Star[4] and gunners serving onboard torpedo spheres.[5]
The helmet was cast from neutral alloy armor,[6] and offered protection for the gunner during combat operations.[1] The clamshell design included a polarized filter to protect the gunner's eyes from blinding flashes caused by weapons discharges, and the eye slit was used to display tracking data for the wearer.[7] The helmets were also equipped with macrobinocular viewplates and sensor arrays to assist in the gunner in tracking fast-moving targets.[1]
Behind the scenes
During production of Star Wars: Episode IV A New Hope, the nickname for the Death Star gunners' helmets was "beetle helmets."[6]
