"Datafile on System VV-99-7JE-2N71: Dangerous ion discharge activity present. Sun: spectral classification orange-yellow; see reference note later in file."
―Report by Bshrah-Ky-Ushsj[3]

System VV-99-7JE-2N71 was located in the Mid Rim's Shiwal sector. It contained an unstable orange-yellow star and sixteen planets, of which nine were gas giants and one non-gaseous world sustained an ecosystem with various species.

The star system was surveyed by the Galactic Republic scout Bshrah-Ky-Ushsj, who noted in a report that the system's sun was prone to flaring and that it could potentially explode as a nova. At some point, the Kragg's Fury, the starship of the pirate Hez Kragg ended up abandoned in the system.

The fortune hunter Sig Coven discovered the drifting Kragg's Fury during the reign of the Galactic Empire. Coven informed the scholar Jonas Durns about his find, and Durns in turn arranged for an expedition to System VV-99-7JE-2N71 to confirm the starship's identity. Durns recruited a group of spacers for transportation to the system, and the expedition ultimately boarded the ancient vessel and subsequently left it with a valuable chest. The Kragg's Fury, however, self-destructed by flying into the system's star.

Description

"Nine planets are gaseous; seven are solid matter. Five of the solid worlds have atmospheres. Planet Four has breathable atmosphere; variety of lifeforms present, none are predatory to sapients."
―Report by Bshrah-Ky-Ushsj[3]

System VV-99-7JE-2N71 was located in the Shiwal sector,[1] a part of the New Territories portion of[2] the Mid Rim.[1] The system's weak, orange-yellow star was unstable and prone to highly intensive flaring and outgassing. As a result, the resulting activity of ion discharges in the system presented a hazard to visitors.[3]

The system's sun was orbited by sixteen prominent planets, one of which was covered in yellow-orange clouds. Nine of the orbital bodies were gas giant–type worlds, and the rest of the planets were made up of solid matter. Five of the non-gaseous worlds had atmospheres, with the air of the fourth planet being breathable. The fourth planet was inhabited by various species, but there were no predators there that could pose a threat to sentient beings.[3]

History

Visitors to the system

"Alert: Detailed analysis of solar componentry has shown massive flaring and outgassing with potential for nova explosion. Standard warning beacons have been placed along outer system perimeter."
―Report by Bshrah-Ky-Ushsj[3]

At some point, the Galactic Republic scout Bshrah-Ky-Ushsj performed a survey of System VV-99-7JE-2N71. The scout briefly described the main planets of the system in a datafile report, although at least one of the worlds was left unnamed and the scout was unable to perform a proper examination of the one planet in the system that had a breathable atmosphere and living organisms on it. In addition, Bshrah-Ky-Ushsj carried out a detailed analysis of the stellar components of the system's sun and determined that the star could at one point explode as a nova. To warn potential future arrivals, the scout placed standard warning beacons along the perimeter of the outer system.[3]

The Kragg's Fury was adrift in System VV-99-7JE-2N71.

The Kragg's Fury, the starship of the legendary Dread Buccaneer Hez Kragg, eventually ended up abandoned in System VV-99-7JE-2N71. A skeleton was seated in the command chair of the bridge, with two chests—one empty but adorned with a valuable seal of Kragg and the other filled with jewels and other valuables—lying at its feet. An ancient gladiator droid was programmed to react to an attempt to take either one of the chests and plot a course for the starship to plunge into the system's sun. According to a later child's fable, a powerful Jedi Knight defeated Kragg aboard his ship but was forced to leave the vessel adrift due to being grievously wounded during the fight.[3]

During the reign of the Galactic Empire, the fortune hunter and scout Sig Coven accidentally discovered the Kragg's Fury. Taking holographic images of the starship but unable to identify it at the time, Coven recorded the hyperspace coordinates of System VV-99-7JE-2N71 on a direct-read-only astrogation datacard and eventually contacted the scholar and university professor Jonas Durns. Durns, who had been trying to prove the historicity of Kragg for many years, believed that treasure looted during the pirate's raid on the Nijune Treasure Fleet was still aboard his starship. The researcher was then able to secure funding from his university for an expedition to determine whether the ship Coven had found was indeed the Kragg's Fury.[3]

The expedition

"You can't be too careful in my business."
―Sig Coven, upon being questioned about the secure astrogation datacard[3]

Durns subsequently hired a group of spacers to transport himself, his daughter Keya, and Coven to System VV-99-7JE-2N71. While in transit, one of the spacers sliced Coven's datacard. Learning of the Republic survey report of the system, the spacers confronted Coven about the hazardous nature of their destination. However, Coven dismissed their concerns and believed the risk to be one worth taking.[3]

Arriving in System VV-99-7JE-2N71, the spacers' ship approached the Kragg's Fury, noticing the personal emblem of Kragg painted on the vessel's hull. Docking with the pirate starship, the expedition navigated the ship's interior, avoiding traps and ancient defense droids on its way to the bridge. After determining the password needed to enter the bridge, the spacers retrieved one of the chests located there, which led to the gladiator droid sending the ship into the system's sun. The expedition members managed to escape the Kragg's Fury aboard their starship and observed the disintegration of the pirate vessel in a series of explosions at the star. The spacers' ship subsequently left System VV-99-7JE-2N71 with the pirate chest aboard.[3]

Behind the scenes

System VV-99-7JE-2N71 appeared in "Silent Fury," a roleplaying game adventure outline authored by Tony Russo for use with West End Games' Star Wars: The Roleplaying Game and published within the article "A Taste of Adventure" as part of the August 1995 Star Wars Adventure Journal 7. This article assumes the scenario plays out as described.[3] The 2009 reference book The Essential Atlas placed the system in grid square L-7.[2]
