"Oh, he's a small one, isn't he? If you decide to leave your cell, you'll find that sungwas grow to be at least twice his size."
―Gir Kybo Ren-Cha, to Gerin Toda after a sungwa attempted to attack her through the bars of her cell[1]

Sungwas were massive, doglike[2] pack scavengers[1] native to the bog moon of Bogden. Resembling a[2] nightmarish[3] cross of wolf and weasel,[2] they were quadrupedal creatures with yellow skin covered in golden fur and a pair of red eyes.[1]

A pack of sungwas inhabited an abandoned freighter marooned in one of the moon's swamps that became a base of the pirate Gir Kybo Ren-Cha. After imprisoning Gerin Toda, the daughter of Lord Malameu Toda, aboard the starship, Ren-Cha attempted to use the pack to dissuade her from escape her cell. Despite this, Toda was able to fight off the sungwas with the help of Jann Tosh and C-3PO, who, along with Jessica Meade and R2-D2, were sent by King Mon Julpa of Tammuz-an to liberate Toda, while R2 led away the pack and manipulated them into attacking Ren-Cha, who was pursuing the trespassers through the moldering ship's bowels.[1]

Sungwas first appeared in "The Revenge of Kybo Ren," the eighth episode of the animated series Star Wars: Droids: The Adventures of R2-D2 and C-3PO,[1] which originally aired on October 26, 1985.[4]
