Silver Fyre was a female Human who led the Aquaris Freeholders, said by some to be the largest gang of pirates, mercenaries and smugglers in the galaxy during the era of the Galactic Civil War. Fyre built a large underwater base on the ocean-covered world of Aquaris, and after pledging her support to the Rebel Alliance in their battle against the Empire, welcomed a group of Rebel leaders including Luke Skywalker, Han Solo and Leia Organa to Aquaris. After the Rebels helped Fyre uncover her second-in-command Kraaken as an Imperial asset, Fyre pledged the Freeholders to help the Rebels break the Yavin blockade.

A Human female criminal and rogue, Silver Fyre became the leader of a gang called the Freeholders during the era of the Galactic Civil War, and built a dangerous reputation in underworld circles. Over the course of her criminal career, Fyre had several run-ins with Corellian smuggler Han Solo, earning his ire after her Freeholders hijacked a shipment of spice Solo was delivering. Along the way, Fyre developed a reputation for treachery, and sold out a number of rivals to the Galactic Empire.[2] After building the Freeholders into one of the galaxy's largest piracy and smuggling gangs, Fyre began looking for a planet to call their own. Although she considered more obvious choices such as Myrkr and the Vergesso Asteroids, she ultimately settled on Aquaris, an uninhabited, ocean-covered world[3] in the Expansion Region.[4]

Fyre sunk thousands of credits into constructing a state-of-the-art underwater base for her Freeholders, which could remain undetected by sensors but still could connect to the wider world through a mechanized landing pad that could be extended above the ocean's surface.[3] As the Galactic Civil War began to rage, however, Fyre found her interests being pulled away from crime. Having spent years attempting to evade Imperial law, Fyre became intrigued with what the Rebel Alliance had to offer, and was convinced to join the Rebel fold after meeting major Rebel leader Leia Organa at the Conference of Uncommitted Worlds on the planet Kabal.[3] Organa—along with fellow Rebel leaders Luke Skywalker and Solo, Fyre's old smuggling acquaintance—visited Fyre on Aquaris soon afterward, looking for shelter and aid helping to break the Imperial blockade of the Yavin system.[2]

Solo, still distrustful of Fyre from their past encounters, felt obligated to prove to Organa that Fyre was planning to betray them to the Imperials. Assuming that Fyre had their room bugged, he began to speak openly about secret information stored on their droids C-3PO and R2-D2. Solo's instincts about being spied upon, incidentally, were correct—Fyre quickly received a report on everything from her second-in-command, Kraaken. Genuinely wanting to prove her loyalty to the Rebels, Fyre agreed to a plan formed by Kraaken to win Solo's trust: her, Kraaken and their Rebel guests would go out on a hunting party where the rest of the group would be threatened, before Fyre rushed to save the day in her aqua-skimmer.[2]

Although Fyre elected not to go through with the plan, she and Solo had to make a rescue anyway, when Kraaken—who had Skywalker with him in his skimmer—went after a deadly demonsquid. Fyre and Solo rushed to save Solo, only to find that Kraaken wasn't there, having stunned Skywalker and fled the skimmer before it reached the demonsquid. Realizing that Kraaken was an Imperial traitor and had conspired to get them out of the way so he could go after the droids, Fyre and the Rebels rushed back to their base, arriving in time to save a pinned-down Organa and capture Kraaken. Grateful for their help exposing her lieutenant's treachery, Fyre committed the aid of her Freeholders to the fighting in the Yavin system.[2]

An adept liar and skilled criminal, Silver Fyre was particularly practiced in blending in with her situation: she could appear as the perfect diplomat just as easily as she could the cutthroat gangster. However, by the era of the Galactic Civil War, Fyre had started to become fixated on higher ideals than just plunder—[2] her interest in the Rebel Alliance was partially borne out of irritation of having to deal with Imperial scrutiny of her criminal activities,[3] even though she had worked with Imperials in the past. Always more ambitious and cunning than most common gangsters, Fyre was genuine in her support of the Rebel Alliance, but was willing to resort to deceitful tactics in proving her loyalty, and she still remained sharp in her skills despite going "respectable."[2]

Behind the scenes

Silver Fyre appeared in Traitor's Gambit, a comic strip story arc written by Archie Goodwin, illustrated by Al Williamson and released in 1982.[2]
