Rescue of Wookiee slaves
In 1 BBY, the Alliance to Restore the Republic mounted a rescue mission to recover Wookiee slaves being transported from Kashyyyk to work on the construction of the Death Star aboard the Imperial BFF-1 bulk freighter Toral.
Prelude
- "Hey, Raider. Come on. I haven't seen action in months. Let me go."
"OK, Toalagar: You're in. You and Farlander over there." - ―Toalagar and Samuel Raider
In 1 BBY,[2] Alliance forces recovered a pair of Rebel pilots who had escaped from Stars' End prison on Mytus VII. The pilots brought information that a ship carrying Wookiee slaves was departing Kashyyyk bound for a secret Imperial military construction project. The Alliance planned a rescue mission, hoping to save the Wookiees and to learn more about what the Empire was building.[1] One of the escaped pilots, Captain Samuel Raider, was chosen to lead the mission, and selected his fellow escapee, Toalagar, and Captain Keyan Farlander to accompany him in a group of three T-65 X-wing starfighters from Red Squadron.[3]
The battle
- "Red 3, why don't you go find another ship?"
- ―Samuel Raider, to Keyan Farlander
Emerging from hyperspace, the Rebels found the slave freighter, the BFF-1 bulk freighter Toral, escorted by six Imperial Alpha-class Xg-1 Star Wings, twelve TIE/LN starfighters, and the Imperial-class Star Destroyer Intrepid. The Assault Gunboats moved to engage and Toalagar, flying as Red Two, was killed by a concussion missile on the first pass. Raider and Farlander eliminated the Star Wings and moved to engage the TIE fighters which had remained with the Toral.[3]
After Farlander scanned the freighter to confirm its cargo, two BTL Y-wing starfighters from Gold Squadron arrived to disable it with their ion cannons, before the Delta-class DX-9 stormtrooper transport Rescue 1 arrived to board it. Meanwhile, the Intrepid began launching reinforcements, which targeted the Rebel transport. The Rebel fighters held off the Imperials until Rescue 1 completed the boarding operation and escaped into hyperspace with the Wookiees aboard.[3]
Aftermath
Documents recovered from the Toral revealed that it was due to rendezvous with a larger convoy near Orron III before proceeding to the site of the construction project. In a subsequent mission, Rebel forces destroyed the convoy in the hopes of delaying construction while Alliance Intelligence uncovered more information about the nature of the project. The Rebels eventually learned that the construction project was the Death Star, a battlestation equipped with a superlaser capable of destroying a planet.[1]
Behind the scenes
The battle first appeared in the 1993 LucasArts video game Star Wars: X-Wing, in the second mission of "Tour of Duty II: The Great Search", "Rescue Wookiee Slaves."[1]
