R3-M3/Legends
R3-M3[3] was an R3-series astromech droid[2] which was manufactured by Industrial Automaton.[1] A blue-plated droid,[2] R3-M3 had a clear plastex dome that exposed its computer processors.[4] By 0 BBY,[5] R3-M3 served the Galactic Empire and was present aboard the Imperial Death Star battlestation.[2] In that year,[5] R3-M3 was rolling through a corridor in the station when the Jedi Master Obi-Wan Kenobi snuck across the corridor behind the droid in order to deactivate the battlestation's tractor beam. Shortly after, during the Battle of Yavin, the Alliance to Restore the Republic destroyed the Death Star in the Yavin system.[2]
Behind the scenes
R3-M3 first appeared in 1977's Star Wars: Episode IV A New Hope, the first film of the original trilogy.[2] The droid's scene was filmed between June 2 and June 16, 1976 at Elstree Studios's Stage 2.[6] In January 2009,[7] "Toy Wars," an article Jason Fry wrote for the Star Wars Insider magazine's 107th issue, first named the droid as R3-O1.[8] For unknown reasons, however, the droid's name was changed to R3-M3 for a Build-A-Droid action figure made for Hasbro Inc.'s Star Wars: The Legacy Collection toy line[3] in October of that year.[9]
