R2-A5/Legends
R2-A5 was a white-and-green plated R2-series astromech droid[2] manufactured by Industrial Automaton.[1] The astromech droid served the Galactic Empire, and was programmed by the Empire for target acquisition and combat communications. Around the time of the Battle of Yavin, R2-A5 wandered the streets of Mos Eisley,[3] a city on the planet Tatooine.[4] R2-A5 coordinated starfighter attack vectors, and broadcasted target acquisition data to gunnery systems.[2]
Behind the scenes
R2-A5 first appeared in the 1977 original trilogy film, Star Wars: Episode IV A New Hope, before being replaced with a CGI ronto in the 1997 Special Edition re-release of the film. The droid's scene, where it rolls through the streets as Tatooine locals Obi-Wan Kenobi and Luke Skywalker are apprehended by sandtroopers,[4] was filmed between April 12 to April 22, 1976 at Elstree Studios's Stage 6.[5] In 1998, the droid was first named by Decipher, Inc., for the Special Edition Limited set of their Star Wars Customizable Card Game.[2]
