An identification pad was a device used by the Galactic Empire to confirm the identity of individuals through the use of a thumb imprint. The device's sensor pad was easily fooled by any type of oil or waxy residue. Smugglers took advantage of the weakness by running their thumbs over their eyes, ears, noses or mouths to pick up ear wax or grease residue to fool the sensor.
