Gold Five was the call sign used by Davish "Pops" Krail when he flew with Gold Squadron during the Battle of Yavin.[3]
Though a highly-experienced veteran pilot, Pops was no match for Darth Vader, and was killed by the Sith Lord along with Tiree and Gold Leader Dutch Vander in the assault against the first Death Star.[1]
Behind the scenes
In Star Wars Journal: Captive to Evil, Princess Leia Organa refers to pilot Talos Merkin as Gold Five during the Battle of Yavin,[4] though previous[3] and subsequent[5] sources affirm that Krail was Gold Five at the time.
