Field Work
Field Work is a short story written by Eric S. Trautmann, published in The Thrawn Trilogy Sourcebook. It serves as an introduction to the materials within the sourcebook, and depicts Pollo Tipn receiving a mission from Professor Voren Na'al to investigate unusual reports connected to Grand Admiral Thrawn nearly ten years after the destruction of Mount Tantiss.
Plot summary
History student Herg waits in his university's arboretum for his classmate Pollo Tipn to appear from Professor Voren Na'al classroom. Tipn was asked to stay behind after class by Na'al, which Herg sarcastically inquires about. Tipn initially dodges Herg's questions and states that the meeting with his Professor was top secret. After Herg mocks him and suggests Na'al had asked the student to help with menial chores, Tipn relents and tells his classmate that the Professor had enlisted him for field work.
In a flashback, it's revealed that Na'al enlisted Tipn to join him in a confidential fact-finding mission to the Kathol sector, investigating for Mon Mothma some unusual reports connected to Grand Admiral Thrawn. As preliminary research, Na'al tasked Tipn with reviewing his original notes regarding the Thrawn campaign before boarding a shuttle for Exocron.
