Consume Essence
Consume Essence, also known as Feed on Dark Side,[1] was a Force power that allowed a dark side user to feed on the fear, hatred, or other negative emotions of others to make himself more powerful. It did not matter why the others were filled with dark emotions; the feelings alone would suffice. Both the Sith Lord Scourge and the Emperor of the reconstituted Sith Empire exhibited the ability; at the age of six, the Emperor—then known as Tenebrae—was able to feed off of his stepfather's anger at his wife's affair to unlock his Force-sensitivity and break the man's neck. Tenebrae continued to use the technique throughout his conquest of his homeworld Medriaas, feeding off of the suffering generated by public executions and torture. Millennia later, Scourge found that his strength in battle came from drawing strength from his opponents; but while it made him more powerful and his enemies weaker, it left him at a disadvantage when facing droids.[2]In 1003 BBY, Dessel instinctively used this power while gambling, mingling his hate and that of a republic solider and drawing power. Groshik, the barkeep, stated that the young miner's hate had infected everyone with fury and it was all he could do to not shoot the patrons with his stun blaster.[3]
During Obi-Wan Kenobi's duel with Darth Maul on Naboo, the former described Maul to have fed on his anger and strength after the mortal wounding of Qui-Gonn Jinn, Maul was gaining strength while he lost his after entering a rage.[4]
More than a hundred years later on Mon Cala, the Emperor Krayt would use this power to preserve his body against the Vong implants that weakened him. So great was the strength he drew from the slaughter around him that he briefly regained his good cheer and boasted that he would not die of the parasites.[5]
