Winged Gundark
"Winged Gundark" was the nickname among the peers of a male[1] TIE pilot in the Imperial Navy who attained the nickname for[2] an impressive number of career kills[3] in high-altitude battles[2] by 3 ABY. By that year's Imperial occupation of the planet Bespin,[4] Winged Gundark had joined the Imperial Obsidian Squadron, flying under the call sign of Obsidian 7 and piloting a TIE/LN starfighter modified for upper atmosphere maneuvers[2] and pursuits.[1]
Following Bespin's occupation, the YT-1300 light freighter Millennium Falcon managed to escape from the planet's Cloud City,[5] resulting in Obsidian Squadron's pursuit of the freighter into space.[3] Winged Gundark piloted one of the pursuing TIE/LN starfighters,[1] though the Millennium Falcon ultimately escaped Obsidian Squadron and Imperial capture.[5] At some point, Winged Gundark, accompanied by at least one other TIE/LN starfighter, flew over an astronomical object, with a large starship above the starfighters.[6] Winged Gundark's nickname was shared with[2] the gundark, a large bipedal furry primate species from the planet Vanqor.[7]
Behind the scenes
The name Winged Gundark was created for the 1997 Cloud City Limited expansion set of Decipher's Star Wars Customizable Card Game.[2] He would later be mentioned in 1998's Star Wars: Behind the Magic, where Obsidian 7 was linked to one of the TIE fighters seen in the 1980 original trilogy film Star Wars: Episode V The Empire Strikes Back, thus also establishing his status as the fighter's offscreen pilot in the film.[1] Before the film was released on May 21, 1980,[8] Winged Gundark's fighter appeared simultaneously in The Empire Strikes Back Storybook[9] and the film's novelization,[10] both released April 12 of the same year.[11][12]
