Varn was the chief scout of the Serpent Masters, a group of lizard-riding bandits that ruled the barren world of Ophideraan, and the right-hand man of Supreme Serpent Master Tyrann. A skilled rider of the Ophideraan flying serpent and the best duelist in his band of outlaws, Varn wore salvaged stormtrooper armor.[1]
In 0 ABY, Varn captured Rebel agent Luke Skywalker and Tanith Shire, a slave of the Serpent Masters who had been offworld working for the bandit gang. Skywalker and Shire conspired to overthrow the Serpent Masters, resulting in Varn being called in to battle with Skywalker in an aerial duel—however, Skywalker abandoned his fight with Varn to sabotage Tyrann's device that controlled the flying serpents, leading to the Serpent Masters' downfall.[1]
