A third-degree or class three droid was a droid programmed for interaction with organic beings in services such as child care, diplomacy, interpreting, teaching, and the social sciences. Protocol droids and service droids were third-degree droids.

Some droids could be equipped with protocol chips to give them the cognitive functionality to engage socially.
