The Protocols were a set of rules established in the hopes of preventing the loss of too many pilots due to honor duels.

A facet of the protocols dictates that a new pilot may not duel an experienced pilot since only the new pilot would benefit, either by receiving training from the fight or earning a chance to kill a more prestigious opponent. But if the new pilot has invented a new maneuver or tactic which the older pilot could benefit from facing, the duel might be approved.
