"I went to the Imperial Opera and treated myself to their production of The Agony of Tarkin. Spectators proved more amusing than the theatre at times."
―Mara Jade[1]

The Agony of Tarkin was an opera performed by the Imperial Opera Company.[1] It was about the death of Grand Moff Wilhuff Tarkin, who perished aboard the first Death Star during the Battle of Yavin in 0 BBY.[2]

The opera was running on Imperial Center during 4 ABY. The production used a huge stage, glowing in pink light, and a stellar backdrop. It also allowed attendees in balcony seats to view close-up shots of the performance via holograms.[1]

During this period, Mara Jade treated herself to a viewing of The Agony of Tarkin during a vacation from her duties as Emperor's Hand. She felt that at times, spectators were more amusing than the theatre. After the opera's conclusion, Jade attended a reception along with other guests to the opera, many of whom were Imperial officers.[1]

Behind the scenes

The Agony of Tarkin first appeared briefly in the second issue of Star Wars: Mara Jade – By the Emperor's Hand, written by Timothy Zahn and Michael A. Stackpole and published in 1998. It also received an entry in The Complete Star Wars Encyclopedia, released in December 2008.
