Shoelaces were a way to secure a shoe or boot. Stormtrooper boots did not use shoelaces.
At the beginning of Roan Novachez's second year at the Jedi academy at the Jedi Temple on Coruscant, he was delighted at the arrival of his friend Bill because he understood droid language. The protocol droid RW-22 had been following him around and Bill was able to explain that he was trying to tell Roan that his shoelaces were untied.
