Red Wing was the call sign of a member of Red Squadron, a Rebel Alliance starfighter squadron which was also referred to as "Red Wing." The starfighter pilot designated Red Wing was second-in-command to Red Leader[2] Wedge Antilles,[3] and was tasked with overseeing the individual units that comprised the starfighter wing. During the Battle of Endor[1] in 4 ABY,[4] Red Wing led Red Squadron fighter units into combat against the starfleet of the Galactic Empire,[1] culminating in the destruction of the second Death Star and the death of Emperor Palpatine in the Endor system.[3]

Behind the scenes

"Red Wing, stay alert—we could run out of space real fast."
―Wedge Antilles[5]

The character designated Red Wing was first mentioned in the 1984 reference title A Guide to the Star Wars Universe.[1] "Red Wing" is briefly mentioned in the[5] May 12,[6] 1983 novelization of Star Wars: Episode VI Return of the Jedi,[5] the original trilogy film released in May 25 of the same year,[7] but it is not clear if the reference is to the pilot or Red Squadron as a whole. A similar, albeit much clearer, issue in the novelization involved the use of "Gold Wing" in reference to both Gold Squadron and the pilot designated Gold Wing.[5]
