Purge virus
The Purge virus was a computer virus.
It was used by alien cultures who did not like the idea of other races 'stealing' or using their technology, downloading into the interfacing computer. There, it slowly worked its way to destroy the computer core, at which point the person suffering from the computer virus had the option of visiting the creator of the virus and paying a "fee" to give the translation code needed to restore the computer database.
