Protocol officers served the Galactic Empire in the Imperial Security Bureau's Internal Affairs branch. Their mandate was to root out those inside the Empire that were planning to undermine it for either personal or idealogical reasons. Despite having no official jurisdiction inside the Imperial Military, protocol officers were often assigned to military units where there were suspected traitors. When identified, the protocol officers made an example of the offender. Lieutenant Vella Derwayne served the Empire as a protocol officer.
