Otter
An otter was a type of creature. One species of otter, the Klepthian rock otter,[1] was native to[2] the Klepthia system in the Expansion Region's Tynna sector.[3] When the rock otters fed on basalt clams, the former chewed intensely on the shells of the latter.[1]
Otters resembled the Tynnans,[4] a bipedal,[5] aquatic,[6] sentient species native to the planet Tynna,[4] also located in the Tynna sector.[3] The Selonians,[7] fur-coated sentients inhabiting the[6] Core Worlds[8] planet Selonia,[6] and the flying bulfusi creature of the Core planet Corulag both also resembled otters.[9] In addition, the Sessehshellah, furred sentients from the planet Shaymore[10] in the Expansion Region's Immerian Outback sector,[11] had the physical features of giant river otters.[10]
Behind the scenes
Otters were first mentioned in "Rings of Bright Water," a roleplaying game adventure seed included in the 1987 first edition rulebook of West End Games' Star Wars: The Roleplaying Game. The adventure idea was authored by Ken Rolston.[10] In the real world, otters are furred aquatic mammals which eat fish and clams.[12]

The Essential Atlas and Galactic Cartography: Official Discussion on the Jedi Council Forums (Literature board; posted by jasonfry on December 11, 2007, 7:59am; accessed March 6, 2016): "I wouldn't get your hopes up re alien homeworlds, beyond simple stuff like the Planetnamian species getting a Planetnamia on the map or things Dan and I can account for with a relatively quick reference." (backup link) Jason Fry, co-author of The Essential Atlas, stated his intention to create homeworlds for numerous species based on context implied from their names. This article treats the Klepthia system as the location of one such homeworld with regard to the Klepthian rock otter species.
