Orion-style ion sublight engine
The Orion-style sublight engine was an older form of ion drive. It emitted a great deal of radiation and engine backblast, requiring sturdy pits to facilitate landing. Most modern ships are equipped with the more efficient Hoersch-Kessel ion drive.[1]
