The New Star was an Imperial EF76 Nebulon-B escort frigate that served as part of the Imperial Navy in 0 ABY. Commanded by Captain Miech Conar, it was assigned to accompany the convoy Shipment 1037 to the Outer Rim Territories that year. While it and the convoy were en route, they were met by the Far Orbit, a seemingly Imperial frigate that had come to help protect the convoy. However, as the Far Orbit was actually an Alliance to Restore the Republic privateer vessel, it led an Alliance strike force to capture the convoy somewhere in the Core Worlds' Ringali Shell. In the resulting battle, the New Star was captured.

Description

The New Star was an EF76 Nebulon-B escort frigate[2] produced by Kuat Drive Yards.[1] Measuring 300 meters in length,[3] the frigate had at least one deflector shield generator installed, and possessed an armament of twelve turbolaser cannons, twelve smaller laser cannons, and two tractor beams. The New Star carried twelve TIE/LN starfighters and had a full complement of shuttles and escape pods. It also had enough room to house two platoons of soldiers, besides the crew.[2]

History

The New Star was commanded by Captain Miech Conar and was serving as an Imperial vessel[2] by 0 ABY,[4] at the time that the Empire was engaging the Alliance to Restore the Republic in the Galactic Civil War. That year, the New Star was assigned to accompany Shipment 1037, a convoy of over ten transports, to the Outer Rim Territories. During the escort duty, Conar brought along a platoon each of stormtroopers and Imperial Navy troopers on his ship.[2]

While the frigate was on guard duty, its convoy was joined by Transport A-175, along with the escort frigate Far Orbit, near the planet Brentaal IV in the Core Worlds' Ringali Shell. The Far Orbit claimed that it had orders to accompany the convoy as well, a set of orders that Conar did not bother checking with Bormea Imperial Command. The Far Orbit also asserted that a new destination had been set to link up with an even larger escort force, as Imperial Navy Intelligence had uncovered a plot to intercept the convoy.[2]

However, as the convoy and the New Star arrived at the supposed rendezvous in the Ringali Shell with the escort force, they were attacked by an Alliance strike force, consisting of thirty-six BTL Y-wing starfighters and a pair of CR90 corvettes, and turned on by the Far Orbit. In actuality, the Far Orbit was an Alliance privateer vessel in disguise and had funneled the convoy into a trap. In the resulting battle, the convoy was captured, as well as the New Star, which was relatively undamaged. The privateers were awarded two million credits for the capture of the New Star by the Alliance.[2]

Commanders and crew

The New Star was commanded by Captain Miech Conar, a competent, intelligent leader who did not want to get killed in a pointless battle between two ships. The frigate was also fully crewed by well trained ship hands and officers.[2]

Behind the scenes

The New Star first appeared in the adventure scenario The Hijacking of Shipment 1037, which was published in The Far Orbit Project, by Timothy S. O'Brien. The book was a supplement to West End Games' Star Wars: The Roleplaying Game and was a sequel of sorts to the previous publication, Pirates & Privateers, carrying on that book's theme by following the Far Orbit's adventures. In the adventure scenario, it is possible for the Alliance to not send any help for the Far Orbit in its attack on the convoy and the New Star, leaving the Far Orbit to try to take the convoy alone. If that is the case, the Far Orbit might attempt to capture the New Star. It is also possible for the New Star to be destroyed in the battle instead of being captured, in which case the privateers receive no money from the Alliance. If the New Star is captured but seriously damaged, the Far Orbit's crew is awarded a million credits. However, this article assumes that the course of events that this article presents is correct because they represent the best course of actions for the privateers, who are controlled by the players.
