Narcotic incense was a substance that when burned produced an aromatic smoke that was capable of stimulating or depressing the nervous systems of beings who inhaled it. The various states of euphoria that a user experienced during this process gave narcotic incense a highly addictive quality. However, one notable drawback of the use of narcotic incense was that death was a symptom of prolonged exposure to it.

Behind the scenes

Narcotic incense made its only appearance as one the various airborne substances that Luke Skywalker and Leia Organa inhale when they enter a tavern in the novel Splinter of the Mind's Eye. Though the novel did not expound upon just what it was, the entry for narcotic incense in the first edition of A Guide to the Star Wars Universe, which reached two sentences in length, considerably increased the depth of knowledge regarding the topic.

Narcotic incense was later given a profile in a sidebar regarding a number of illicit drugs in the article "Underworld: A Galaxy of Scum and Villainy." With the statement that "Prolonged exposure has absolutely lethal effects,"[1] the article appears to contradict A Guide to the Star Wars Universe's assertion that it "addicting to some life forms and quite lethal to others."[2]
