Kelp/Legends

Kelp was a type of seaweed found in the oceans of Taris. Since the planet was a ecumenopolis, the only food sources of food were Tarisian kelp and marine animals. Most kelp died just prior to the Tarisian Civil War due to poisoning from industrialists.

The ancestors of the Mon Calamari learned to develop aquaculture systems, including keeping fish in pens and the cultivation of kelp.
