Emergency stud
An emergency stud was a structural device located aboard X-wing starfighters, and presumably other starfighters as well. When pressed, the emergency stud would trigger a series of small explosive bolts which jettisoned the canopy allowing the pilot to make an emergency exit from the cockpit.
