Code burning was a tactic used by pirates and privateers to stay one step ahead of law enforcement agencies. The tactic was an expensive one, as it involved the pirates routinely switching ships to stay ahead of updates in transponder code logs, either through purchase or theft. Another method was to replace the ship's power plant.[1]
