By 4 ABY,[4] shortly before the Battle of Endor,[2] Sienar Fleet Systems began manufacturing[1] TIE/D Defenders for the Galactic Empire.[5] Onyx 1 was one such TIE/D Defender produced during that time, with the starfighter's design intended to emulate advantages of starfighters fighting for the Alliance to Restore the Republic. Onyx 1's crew consisted of a TIE pilot, and the Defender was armed with laser cannons, ion cannons, and missile launchers.[2]
Around the time of the Battle of Endor, Onyx 1 was part of the Imperial Navy's Onyx Squadron.[2] It was operated by Colonel Jendon, a senior test pilot who was ordered to shake down the first TIE/D Defenders assigned to Imperial fleet operations.[3]
Behind the scenes
Onyx 1 was introduced in 2000's Death Star II Limited expansion set of the Decipher, Inc. Star Wars Customizable Card Game.[2]
