The Bounty Hunter of Ord Mantell is a comic strip written by Archie Goodwin and illustrated by Al Williamson, originally published in February 1981 by the Los Angeles Times Syndicate. It was later reprinted in Amazing Heroes magazine #1–5.
It was republished by Dark Horse Comics in Classic Star Wars 1, and up to page 15 of Classic Star Wars 2. It was republished again on StarWars.com's webstrips section of Hyperspace and was made available to the public after penciller Al Williamson passed away on June 14, 2010.
Plot summary
While searching for a new planet to host a Rebel base, Luke and Leia's ship gets destroyed, and Han Solo has to come rescue them. They escape, but Solo's ship suffers major damage. Han stops for repairs on Ord Mantell.
When the bounty hunter Skorr sees that Han has landed on Ord Mantell, he hatches a plan to capture Han and cash in on Jabba Desilijic Tiure's death mark against the smuggler. During the night, Skorr kidnaps Luke and Leia and tells Solo that he will free Luke and Leia if Han surrenders to the bounty hunter. As proof of the kidnapping Skorr gives Han Luke's lightsaber.
The next morning Han flies to the arranged meet-up place, Ten Mile Plateau. After Skorr frees Luke and Leia, the three are saved by Chewbacca. They make their way to the Millennium Falcon and escape from the planet.
Development
The story is based on a line Han Solo uttered in The Empire Strikes Back.
The strip was the first Star Wars newspaper strip released in the Los Angeles Times since the Star Wars Fan Club lobbied for the series' continuation after its near cancellation.
