Sentience programming or artificial sentience[1] allowed a droid to think, feel, and value its own life. Such programming was gifted to IG-88, who continued to give it to other droids that he recruited into his army. This programming was the reason why droid rights sympathizers tried to free them from their "forced servitude", and was the highest level of autonomy a droid could attain.
