"I had just enough warning to allow me to gulp in a lungful of air."
―Luke Skywalker[1]

A lung was a major internal organ. For those organisms which possessed lungs, the organs played a vital role in the breathing and respiration processes. Most species, including Humans, had two lungs, though members of the Bith species had only a single lung, a puncture to which was fatal if untreated.[source?] The Gungan species had strong and sturdy lungs which allowed them to hold their breath for extended periods, enabling them able to travel freely to their underwater cities.[2]

Anakin Skywalker, a Human who, as the Sith Lord Darth Vader, had his lungs seared after he was immolated on Mustafar in 19 BBY, managed to survive until his master, Palpatine, came to rescue him soon thereafter. The Bith Jedi Ulaha Kore died of injuries she sustained during the disastrous Mission to Myrkr in 27 ABY, the most damaging of which was the puncturing of her single lung.[3]

The lungs of the breather Gand subspecies were adapted to breathing only ammonia and could be damaged by oxygen inhalation.[4] Zuckuss, a Gand bounty hunter, suffered lung damage some time during the Galactic Civil War. He was eventually treated onboard the EF76 Nebulon-B escort frigate Redemption after the Battle of Hoth.[5]

Lung diseases could also occur, such as ascomycetous pneumoconiosis, asthma, Merthian lung infection, pneumonia, and cancer.[6] A pair of illegally cloned lungs could cost 50,000 credits.[7]
